Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest): Ascend to this spectacular monastery clinging to a vertical cliff at 3,000 meters—a must-see spiritual and historical landmark. Return Visit to Kyichu Lhakhang: Revisit this revered temple to further appreciate its ancient significance.
Rest and Trek Preparation: Enjoy a relaxed afternoon to acclimatize and prepare for the trek.
Day 2 focuses on spiritual enrichment and acclimatization. Visiting Tiger’s Nest provides a dramatic introduction to Bhutan’s sacred sites, while the day’s quieter pace ensures you are well-prepared for the physical challenges of the trek.
Drive to Shana: A 2-hour drive to the starting point of the trek. Trekking: 22 km; 7–8 hours Elevation: Ascent of 770 m, minimal descent (10 m).
Route Highlights: Trace the course of a river through dense forests and isolated farmsteads; cross traditional wooden bridges and encounter remnants of ancient trade routes toward Tibet via Tremo La.
Camp at Thanthangka: Settle in a serene meadow with tent, with panoramic views of Mount Jomolhari if weather permits.
Day 3 marks the beginning of your trekking adventure. The trail offers both natural beauty and historical context, as you follow pathways once used by ancient traders. The varied landscape and cultural landmarks make this a deeply enriching day.
Trekking: 19 km; 5–6 hours Elevation: Ascent of 480 m.
Route Highlights: Ascend until you reach an army camp; then follow the river above the tree line to your campsite at Jangothang, where you can enjoy unique views of Mount Jomolhari.
On Day 4, you continue your ascent into higher terrain. The journey offers striking vistas above the tree line and culminates at Jangothang—a campsite known for its dramatic perspectives of the surrounding peaks—providing both physical challenge and visual rewards.
Day 5 is dedicated to rest and acclimatization, a crucial component of high-altitude trekking. This pause allows your body to adjust to the altitude while you take time to absorb the serene environment and natural beauty around you.
Trekking: 17 km; 6–7 hours Elevation: Ascent of 810 m and descent of 1,090 m.
Route Highlights: Follow a stream, cross a bridge, and commence a climb with breathtaking views of Chomolhari, Jichu Drake, and Tserimgang.
Nyele-la Pass: Ascend to a high mountain pass at 4,700 m, then descend gradually to the campsite at Lingshi (4,010 m), enjoying panoramic mountain vistas and views of Lingshi Dzong.
Day 6 challenges you with significant elevation changes and a high-altitude pass. The dramatic ascent to Nyele-la Pass and subsequent descent reward you with unparalleled views of the Himalayan giants, enhancing the overall trekking experience.
Trekking: 22 km; 8–9 hours Elevation: Ascent of 940 m, descent of 920 m.
Route Highlights: Ascend to Yali La Pass at 4,820 m, offering clear day views of Mount Jomolhari, Mount Tserim Gang, and Mount Masas Gang.
Descent to Shodu: After the pass, the trail gently descends to the campsite at Shodu.
Day 7 is one of the most exhilarating segments of the trek. The climb to Yali La Pass tests your endurance but rewards you with expansive, high-altitude vistas. The descent into Shodu offers a pleasant relief, combining challenge with stunning natural beauty.
Trekking: 16 km; 5–6 hours Elevation: Ascent of 250 m, descent of 670 m.
Route Highlights: Follow the Thimphu Chhu river through dense rhododendron forests and past picturesque waterfalls.
Visit Ruins of Barshong Dzong: Explore these historical ruins before descending through forests to the pastureland of Domshisa, where you will set up camp.
